Introducing the Upwind Summer Scholarship "Class of 2016"

Four San Mateo County teens, and one Santa Clara County teen, have been selected to earn their Private Pilot certificates this summer through the Upwind Summer Scholarship Program, based at the San Carlos Airport. The scholarship will provide ground school, flight training, and other flight training resources for Travis Bender of Redwood City; Kyle Caverly of San Mateo; Leon Lam of San Jose; Michael Salazar of San Bruno; and Patrick Shea of San Carlos.
The students will begin ground school this month and will continue with full-time flight training in the summer between their junior and senior years in high school. Ground and flight instruction for the 2016 winners will be conducted at San Carlos Flight Center, based at the San Carlos Airport. Four of the scholarship winners will earn their Private Pilot certificates in airplanes, and one will earn their Private Pilot certificate in a helicopter.
The Upwind Summer Scholarship Program aims to transform high school students into a Private Pilots during the summer between their junior and senior year. Upwind was created to promote piloting and general aviation, to cultivate interest in aviation as a career, and to address the nationwide pilot shortage.
