The Santa Cruz Ave/Alameda de las Pulgas Corridor Improvement Study project will evaluate possible roadway configuration alternatives along Santa Cruz Avenue from Sand Hill Road to Alameda de las Pulgas and along Alameda de las Pulgas between Santa Cruz Avenue and Sharon Road, to determine what safety and connectivity improvements can be achieved for bicycles, pedestrians, and vehicles. The project is led by the County of San Mateo Public Works Department in collaboration with the City of Menlo Park. The County has retained a consultant, Kimley-Horn, to perform the technical analysis and identify feasible solutions.
The consultant gathered additional vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian count information during the early part of May 2017 to ensure the data included school traffic. June through July 2017, the consultant will analyze this data, previous planning studies, existing conditions, and collision history to identify roadway improvement opportunities. This analysis will be used to begin developing a variety of possible improvements that could be applied to the corridor. As part of the identification of improvements, the consultant will identify the trade-offs associated with each of those improvements for all corridor users. A range of feasible improvements and their trade-offs will be presented to the public on August 28, 2017, at a community meeting. Attendees will have an opportunity to weigh in on the range of potential improvement alternatives and share their preferences for the various alternatives. This information will be used to develop a recommended corridor improvement plan. An additional community meeting will be held at the end of 2017 to review the refined proposed improvements.
The Santa Cruz Ave/Alameda de las Pulgas Corridor Improvement Study was developed in response to input received at a community meeting held on January 23, 2017. The Board of Supervisors approved $78,000 in funding for this project at their regularly scheduled meeting on April 25, 2017.
The contractor/consultant was approved through a competitive bid process for on call services. Seven Traffic Engineering firms competed for the Public Works Department's on-call services contract and Kimley Horn was one of three chosen through the process. Of the three, Kimley Horn has extensive knowledge of this particular corridor through work performed in the immediate area, including Alpine Road, Page Mill Road at 280 and Sand Hill Road. They were chosen as the most logical firm to lead a study effort at this location, given their extensive knowledge of the corridor.
October 26, 2017 the Task Force met for the first time. The Task Force will be asked to review and evaluate conceptual plans to be included in the master plan for safety improvements in this corridor.
